二日目 or Day Two in Nishijin

今日はとっても忙しかったので、このアップデートは少ないです。ワハハ学校で5時間に日本語を勉強しました。午前中のレッスンはN３の文法を復習しました。まだまだ、いっぱい文法は困りますけれども、今日沢山習って、頑張ります。お昼休みに近くのカッフェで昼食を食べて、二時くらいに学校へ帰って、午後のレッスンスタートしました。午後はグループレッスンではなくて、一人で先生と会話練習をしたり、ワークをしたり、そこもいっぱい習ったよかった。学校終わったら、竜へ帰って、ちょっとジョギングしました。その後、ティフちゃんとスカイプをして、すごく嬉しくなりました！毎度、ティフちゃんの笑顔を見たら、私も笑顔です！夕食では、関西お好み焼きを食べて、ミスタードーナッツというカッフェで学校の宿題をしました。そろそろ、おやすみなさい！

Today was very busy, so I have to keep this update a little short. I studied for 5 hours at the Wahaha school. During the morning lesson, I reviewed a lot of the grammar found on the N3 Japanese test. The grammar still gives me a lot of troubles, but I learned a lot and will continue to try and tackle it. For lunch, I went to a nearby café, and returned around 2pm for the afternoon lesson. The afternoon session was not a group lesson, but more one on one work that involved conversation practice following a well-prepared workbook. I also learned a lot during the afternoon session. After school, I returned to the dorm, went for a run, and then Skyp’d with Tiff, which made me really happy. Every time I see Tiff’s smiling face, I also smile! For dinner, I ate Kansai-style okonomiyaki, and then went to Mister Donut to do my homework. Time for sleep!

西新初日 or Day One in Nishijin

今日の午後、私は、無事に福岡の西新区へ到着しました。徳山から福岡まで高速バースに乗って、３時間半にかかりました。途中でバースの窓から、とってもいい景色を見ながら、最新のシガーロスのアルバムを聴きました。あっという間に着きました。

明日から金曜日まで、福岡の赤坂区のワハハという日本語学校で学習します。ザブルーベリーハウスという寮で５泊します。この寮はかなり便利だと思います。プライベートの部屋があるし、インターネットもあるし、すごくいい所です。しかも、この寮はけっこうきれいです。

今日、チェックインの後で、西新駅と赤坂駅の間にぶらぶら歩いて、大堀公園を発見しました。福岡は大堀公園で有名です。長渕剛は大堀公園について歌いますよ。興味があれば、「男は女が必要さ」という曲を聴いてみてください。とにかく、大濠公園は本当に素晴らしい公園です。明日、そこでジョギングやってみたいです。気持いい。

その次、赤坂駅の近くのスターバックスで一時間でアイスキャラメルマキアートを飲みながら、ちょっと日本語を勉強して、寮に帰りました。

I arrived safely this afternoon to Fukuoka’s Nishijin district. It took about 3.5 hours on highway bus from Tokuyama to Fukuoka. On the way, I saw some very beautiful views from the bus window as I listened to the new Sigur Ros record.

All this week, I will be attending the Wahaha Japanese Language School in Fukuoka’s Akasaka district, and I am staying at dorm called the Blueberry House for five nights. The dorm is pretty convenient, as it has private rooms, and free internet. On top of that, it is a very clean place.

After I checked in today, I went for a little stroll between Nishijin Station (where the dorm is) and Akasaka Station (where the school is). I found Ohori Park on the way! Fukuoka is famous for Ohori Park. Nagabuchi Tsyoshi sings about this park and if you would like to hear it, check out his song “Otoko wa Ona ga Hitsyousa”.

Anway, Ohori Park is an amazing park, and tomorrow I hope to try going for a little jog there.

I then found a Starbucks near Akasaka Station where I drank a Caramel Macchiato and studied Japanese for a about an hour before retiring back to the dorm.

Well, I am looking forward to tomorrow’s lessons. A little tired now, so will say good night!

お帰り下松：トムさん、こんにちは。この新しい音楽プロジェクトの計画についてちょっと話してもらえませんか。特に、なぜ今ごろ、始めようと決めましたか？

トムさん：年数の間、色々なバンドに参加していたが、いつも自分でイギリス「shoegaze」みたいレコードを録音したかったから。

お帰り下松：この音楽プロジェクトは名前がありますか？

トムさん：まだですよ。でも、バンド名前は考えています。もしかしたら、後二つ曲を録音したら、名前は自由に考えられます。

お帰り下松：アルバムは何処で録音するつもりですか？

トムさん：アメリカのミネアポリスです。私の古里ね。

お帰り下松：誰がこのアルバムをエンジンニアしますか？自分で？

トムさん：私の友達の「Knol Tateさん」はエンジンニアをします。なぜなら、私たちは友達で、録音の時、彼は色々な技術が使えるから。実は、私の曲はかなりシンプルなので、ギターフェードバックとか、沢山音が欲しいんですよ。昔「Jesus & Mary Chain」みたいな？

お帰り下松：何個とどの楽器を弾くつもりですか？

トムさん：ギター、ドラム、バースギター、シンセサイザー。すべての楽器はけっこうゆがめるだと思っています。

お帰り下松：リリースするのはいつでしょうか？デジタルダウンロードだけですか？

トムさん：とりあえず、デジタルダウンロードだけですね。もしかしたら、手作りのCDをリリースするつもりですが、世界中で人々がこのアルバムが欲しいければ、ダウンロードの方が簡単だと思っています。もし、レコード盤があれば、しあわせになりますよ。

お帰り下松：リリース後、コンサートを演奏予定がありますか？それとも、録音だけプロジェクトですか？

トムさん：これは大体録音のプロジェクトですが、多分、演奏します。リリースのコンサートは開くつもりです。その後、様子見かな。

お帰り下松：何か「Kickstarter」を影響させましたか？しかも、それはどう思いますか？

トムさん：私の友人は「Kickstarter」から成功させました。その後、成功させたの友人に確認しました。そして、ゴールできなかったら、全然大丈夫ですよ。でも、ゴールできたら、プロジェクトのために、料金をもらえます。友人は私に応援しているので、今まで楽しいです。

お帰り下松：１７歳の時に「shoegaze」を聴きましたか？

トムさん：そうですよ。特に、「My Bloody Valentine」を聴いた。１７歳のとき、いっぱい「shoegaze」とパンクロックを聴いた。実は、様々な音楽が好きなんですけど、このプロジェクトの中心ははっきり「shoegaze」です。

Farwell Continental guitarist Tommy Rehbein is ready to make a shoegaze record, but he needs your help to make it happen. Rehbein is using Kickstarter, which is an online arts-projects-oriented fundraising site to support the project. If he raises his goal of $2000 by May 19, all systems are go. OK: Hey Tommy, please just tell the people what this project is all about and what has made you finally decide to give it a go.

TR: For a number of years I’ve been in various bands (and still play in Farewell Continental), but I have always wanted to make my own record that mirrors my love for British shoegaze.

OK: Does the project have a name?

TR: Not yet. I’m making a list of names that might work. I think once I hear come completed songs, the name will hit me.

OK: Where will you record it?

TR: I will record it in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – my home area.

OK: Who will engineer it? Or is this totally Tommy Rehbein only?

TR: My friend Knol Tate is engineering the album. I chose him because first, we are good friends and also because he likes to experiment a lot when he records. The songs themselves are pretty simple, 3-chord pop songs, so I want to use mangled tones, a lot of noise, guitar feedback, etc. Kind of like old Jesus & Mary Chain or something.

OK: How many, and what instruments do you plan to use?

TR: Guitars, drums, bass, synth. I’m sure everything will be fairly distorted, too.

OK: When will you plan to release the record and will it be digital-download only?

TR: As of now, it will be digital only. I’ll probably do a short run of physical copies with hand made packaging on cd, but download will be the best way to go because a lot of people from far away will want the album. If I can find someone who will help me put it out on vinyl, that’d be cool.

OK: Do you plan to do shows or is this a recording-only project?

TR: It’s more of a recording project, but I may do a few shows. I plan on having a show to release the album. Beyond that, it’s kind of up-in-the-air.

OK: What made you decide to use Kickstarter and how do you feel about this evolution in the funding of recording projects?

TR: I watched a few friends have success with Kickstarter, then talked to a few people. I wanted to be sure it was legit. Ultimately, I figured it was worth a shot because you don’t have anything to lose: if you don’t meet the goal, you didn’t lose out in a personal investment. But if you make the goal, you have the revenue to make a project. It’s been fun, too, because my friends are really rooting for me.

OK: Were you listening to all these bands at age 17?

TR: Yeah, especially My Bloody Valentine. When I was 17 I listened to a lot of shoegaze music and a lot of punk rock. My tastes are all over the map, but this project specifically focuses on my love for the shoegaze genre.

満喫のゴルフ旅行 or Aioi is Beautiful Country, Folks

確かにゴルフは楽しいスポーツです。緑色芝、美しい景色、友好、そして１回の素晴らしいゲームでホール毎に新しいチャンスがもらえます。

私は最近兵庫県にある相生カントリーで２人の友人と会いました。全員初めてで非常に楽しいコースでした。

私の友人のヤスさんは、東京の新宿に住んでいて、もう一人の友人のマサキさんは、大阪近くの街に住んでいます。マサキさんは、今回初めて会いました。２年ぐらい前にヤスさんと会い、私たちの共通の友人であるマサさんに会いに来ていた時でした。そのときに、エドモントンキャピタルスの野球試合を観戦、その後ビールを２、３飲みました。

ヤスさんとマサさんは、東京の同じ大学に通い、その後友好が続いています。ヤスさんとマサキさんは、秋葉原にあった中学校時代からの友人です。２人ともとっても良い人たちでした。

ラウンド前８：３０くらいに、練習所でウオーミングアップをしたり、最近のゴルフことや、ゴルフの技術について話をし、クラブハウスでコーヒーを飲みました。

誰もがラウンドが始まる前には少し緊張すると思っています。私は、いつも通り最初のティーショット前は少し緊張しています。緊張しているのは当たり前だと思います。

相生カントリーは、素晴らしいコースでした。すべてのホールが興味深く楽しいです。そして特筆すると、コースを通して多くの池があり、フェアーウェイやグリーンは申し分なく、ホール毎に新しいチャレンジを与えてくれます。

ラウンドの間、みんながベストのプレイをし、ダフルと笑い、バーディーやパーのチャンスがあるとお互いに応援しました。

私たちは、一日の最後のティーショットする１８番ホールのことを立ちながら考えていました。私は最後のショットはドライバーで打とう！と言いました。

マサキさんと私のティーショットは、やや左にいきました、そして、ヤスさんのフェアウェイの真ん中に３００ヤード以上すごく飛びました。

すげー、今日一のショットとマサキさんは叫びました。私たちのもらっけのあるティーショットでした。

私たちはついにグルーンに到着し、ゲームの最後を締めくくる最後のパットをしました。

ラウンド後にヤスさんは、相生カントリーは想像していたよりかなり難しかったが、楽しく非常に面白かったコースでしたと話していました。

私も全く同じ考えです。

ヤスさん、マサキさん、ゴルフの楽しいラウンドありがとうございます。非常に楽しかった！次が待ち遠いです。

Golf truly is a fun sport – the green grass, the beautiful views, the friendship, and how every hole presents a new chance makes it a great game. I recently met a couple friends in Hyogo Prefecture for a round of golf at Aioi Country Club. It was everyone’s first time to take on this lovely course.

My friend Yasu lives in Shinjuku, Tokyo and my other friend Masaki lives in a town near Osaka. It was my first time meeting Masaki. I had met Yasu about two years ago in Edmonton when he came to visit our mutual friend Masa. At that time, we went to a baseball game (The Edmonton Capitals) and then for a couple beers. Yasu and Masa went to the same university in Tokyo, and have remained friends ever since. Yasu and Masaki have been friends since their Junior High School days in Akihabara. They are both super nice people.

At about 8:30 in the morning before the round, we warmed up a bit at the practice facilities, talked about our recent golf experiences and golf techniques, and then headed into the clubhouse for a pre-match coffee. I think at that time everyone was a little nervous for the round to start. I am always naturally a bit nervous prior to the first tee-shot.

Aioi Country is a wonderful course. Every hole is interesting and fun. And on top of that, there is a lot of water throughout the course, the fairways and greens are impeccable, and every hole challenges you in a new way.

During the round, everyone played their best, laughing off our “duff” shots and cheering each other on during the birdie and par chances.

As always, in what seemed like an instant, we were standing on the 18th hole thinking of our final tee shot for the day.

“It is the last shot, so let’s hit driver, eh!”, I said.

Masaki and my tee shots went a bit left (actually mine ended up in the next fairway), and Yasu rifled a drive a good 300-plus yards smack down the center of the fairway.

“Amazing! That was definitely today’s best shot!”, Masaki exclaimed, as we went searching for our wayward tee-shots.

We all eventually reached the green safely, putted in our final shots and the round came to a close.

After the round, Yasu mentioned how Aioi Country was much more difficult than he imagined, but definitely a fun and most interesting course

I couldn’t agree with him more.
